C2C Cycling
Holiday Information

For all keen cycle enthusiasts. The ‘C2C’ or ‘Sea to Sea’ cycle route stretches from the harbour at Whitehaven on the Irish Sea to the Abbey and castle at Tynemouth on the shores of the North Sea. This 142-miles cycling route is a great way to see northern England and how the landscape changes sometimes abruptly, and then more gently as you cycle along. There is so much to see, the Cumbrian Lakes and Fells, the bleak Pennines, beautiful Dales, English towns and villages of all sizes. Along the way you should find plenty of time to visit tea shops, pubs and interesting historical sites. There are some quite big hills as well, but nothing that could be classed as Alpine! You will generally be pedalling with the wind at your back and conveniently have your bikes delivered to your first hotel and picked up at the end of your tour.

The original C2C cycling route was developed by Sustrans, a charitable organisation aiming at the development of sustainable transport networks in the UK. The route takes minor roads and ride-able ‘off road’ bridleways that could be used to thread together small towns and country areas across Cumbria, the Pennines, through the Tyne and Wear watershed and onto the more urban parts of the North East. The route so created is called the “C2C,” literally “Sea to Sea,” to differentiate it from the “Coast to Coast” walk, which covers an altogether different route and embraces different scenery.

Itinerary for your
C2C Cycling Holiday

Dedicated to the Coast to Coast route devised by fell walker Alfred Wainwright, C2C Packhorse has served walkers and cyclists across this route for many years. Based at Kirkby Stephen, close to the trail’s halfway mark, the Packhorse provides a comprehensive range of services, thus creating a supportive backdrop to your self-guided trip.

Whitehaven is an attractive historic harbour town on the Cumbrian coast, overlooking the Irish Sea and situated on the western edge of the Lake District. Once one of Britain’s most important trading ports, the town is renowned for its elegant Georgian architecture, picturesque marina and fascinating maritime heritage. Visitors can explore the waterfront, enjoy independent shops, cafés and restaurants, or discover the town’s history at the Beacon Museum.

By Car
Whitehaven is located on the west coast of Cumbria, approximately 40 miles southwest of Carlisle. From the M6 motorway, leave at Junction 40 (Penrith) and follow the A66 west towards Cockermouth, before joining the A595 south to Whitehaven. Alternatively, from Carlisle, follow the A595 south via Wigton and Maryport. The town has several public car parks close to the harbour and town centre.

By Train
Whitehaven railway station is situated on the scenic Cumbrian Coast Line, with regular services connecting the town to Carlisle, Workington and Barrow-in-Furness. Travellers arriving from other parts of the UK can connect via Carlisle, which is served by the West Coast Main Line. The station is conveniently located within walking distance of the harbour and town centre.

Your bikes will be delivered to you this morning where you have them for the next 5 days. Having dipped your wheel in the sea, the ride rolls out gently for the first few miles along the former Ennerdale Railway Line. Leaving this, you approach the Lake District with views over Ennerdale Water and then you pedal around Loweswater. The big hill of the day is up over Whinlatter Pass (318m), shortly after the top there are views over Keswick and to the peak of Skiddaw. It is then a fast and undulating descent and ride into one of the most popular towns in Cumbria: Keswick. Literally, an old cheese town, with a market charter going back to the 1200s. From those days the town grew wealthy from local mining, from the popularity of Lakeland poets and writers and finally from the coming of the railways and the growth of popular tourism in the Lakes. There are plentiful shops, pubs and restaurants. Keswick is a town that nestles beneath giant Skiddaw by the shores of Derwentwater.

A hard but perhaps the most picturesque day. A steep climb out of Keswick takes you to the famous ancient stone circle, which bestrides a hillside reflecting the contours of the mountains around it. Descending to cross the River Greta, you wheel through pretty Threlkeld Village before a quiet road takes you on a loop round the hamlet of Mungrisdale, which at intervals offers beautiful views of the northern Lake District. Next is a long traverse of the Vale of Eden starting with a visit to the ‘Green Village’ of Greystoke and then on to historic Penrith. Accommodation: We use a number of welcoming B&B’s in Penrith town.

Today is punctuated by a number of steep climbs culminating in the longest ascent of the trip up to Hartside Summit 1903 ft / 580 metres, which is also the watershed between the Irish and North Seas. Here you enter the Pennines, great viewpoint from the summit over the Vale of Eden and there is a convenient cafe stop, before a fast ride down into the traditional market town of Alston.

Ascend out of Alston and into the region of old lead mines through the village of Nenthead. There is a steep climb out of the village and you reach Black Hill, the highest point on the C2C, leaving Cumbria for Northumbria. You then descend into the valley of the River East Allen and through the village of Allenheads with its heritage centre and coffee shop. There are also interesting Victorian pumps, especially the Armstrong steam pump that was used for clearing water out the lead mines in the area. From here, there is a steady climb out of Allenheads until you reach the summit of the hill at Currick, entering County Durham and riding with the sound of the Curlew. This is followed by a long descent into the Rookhope Valley. Scars (or “hushes”) from centuries of lead mining are evident in the valley. A short climb out of the valley leads you toward Blanchland, offering stunning views across open moorland before a picturesque descent to Derwent Reservoir. The day’s ride ends at Edmundbyers, a historic and picturesque village known for its 12th-century St. Edmund’s Church. You may appreciate its charming local amenities.

Begin the cycling day with a short climb out of Edmundbyers to join the Waskerley Way, a reclaimed railway path. You will cross the impressive Hownsgill Viaduct and then continue on bypassing Consett and joining another ex-railway cycle path along the Derwent Valley with some beautiful views over the Durham countryside. The route crosses the River Tyne and turns towards Newcastle, soon passing under its different bridges including the famous Tyne Bridge which was built by the same company who built the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Tyne is now wide looking across to Gateshead – by the Millennium Bridge is a great dedicated bicycle café. The ride progresses out of the suburbs, passing Wallsend, where Hadrian’s Wall ends, or begins! The final run and you pass docklands and new marinas to reach the bay near Tynemouth. You can ceremonically dip your wheel in the sea here, because where you finish at the castle and Abbey is high above the water. There is a pub right at the end where you can celebrate your completion of the famous C2C – Coast 2 Coast Cycle Route.

Tynemouth is a picturesque coastal town at the mouth of the River Tyne, approximately 8 miles east of Newcastle upon Tyne. It offers convenient onward travel connections by public transport and road.

By Train and Metro

Tynemouth is served by the Tyne and Wear Metro, with regular services connecting the town to Newcastle city centre, Newcastle Central Station and Newcastle International Airport. From Newcastle Central Station, mainline rail services provide onward connections to Edinburgh, York, London and other major UK destinations.

By Car

Tynemouth has good road connections via the A19 and A1058 Coast Road, providing access to Newcastle, the A1 and the wider motorway network. Newcastle city centre is approximately 20–30 minutes away by car, depending on traffic.

By Bus

Local bus services connect Tynemouth with North Shields, Whitley Bay, Newcastle and surrounding coastal communities. These provide a convenient alternative to the Metro, particularly for shorter journeys.

By Air

Newcastle International Airport is the nearest major airport, approximately 45 minutes from Tynemouth by Metro, with a change at South Gosforth. The airport offers domestic and international flights.

By Ferry

The nearby North Shields ferry terminal offers passenger ferry services to IJmuiden, near Amsterdam. The Shields Ferry also connects North Shields with South Shields across the River Tyne.

Excellent and well organised C2C A very well organised trip, Hayley and the team were very responsive and the accommodations chosen were all good, some excellent. The bag pick up and drop went very efficiently and overall I had a great time and would highly recommend Packhorse.

Memorable Walking Holiday in an Extremely Beautiful Area This was a spectacular experience to celebrate our retirements. It was our first walking holiday but hopefully not the last. All the accommodations were really lovely with excellent breakfasts, the scenery was stunning, the people from around the world were so interesting and friendly, and Coast to Coast Packhorse did an outstanding job of providing support, especially during Storm Floris. I’m glad we booked with the local experts. Our bags were always waiting for us once we arrived at our lodging. Hayley was very helpful answering questions and setting us up with the gpx files. John, who shuttled us over to St. Bee's from Kirby Stephen, was a great driver and easy to talk to. Thank you to everyone for making this such a special vacation.

A brilliant experience with excellent support from C2C Packhorse that made everything manageable. We undertook this challenge as a 'Daddy-Daughter' adventure. We were joined by two other members of the family for 2 days/ 3 nights. We had an amazing time with great highs, some difficulties and a range of weathers but never had a cross word and we are so much closer as a result and both have a huge sense of achievement. The people, scenery, food and drink were wonderful and each part of the country has its own distinctive character. We would not have been able to do it without C2C Packhorse: they took the pressure off booking accommodation that was appropriate and actually had more 'nice touches' and little luxuries than I was expecting - we were really impressed. We met others walking who were unsupported and our days and journey distances were all in our control which was really important on the longer, tougher days: not everyone had this luxury. Transporting bags was really easy - as was pick up - a huge plus for us. More than this, on the days we were moving very slowly we had phone calls and welfare checks to make sure that all was ok and that we arrived safely. Support pre-booking and over the event was prompt and much appreciated. Huge thanks to Hayley and Kate for this and for working around our specific requirements: with my busy job I could not have put this trip together without them: the personal visit in Kirkby Stephen was a nice touch too. A highly recommended challenge made possible by a company with the right values.

Well organised adventure Just completed my Coast to Coast adventure. Originally, I approached Packhorse to just organise my baggage transfers and I was going to organise my own accommodation. I had tried with several companies but they wanted, what I considered, a ridiculous amount of money for a single supplement for a sole traveller. When I explained this to the Packhorse team they said their single supplement was no where near what I had been quoted by others. Packhorse quoted and I accepted. Accommodation, baggage transfers, maps and notes provided. The entire experience was fantastic from start to finish. A faultless display from Hayley and the Packhorse team. 10/10

A Beautifully Organised and Truly Memorable Coast to Coast Walk We had an absolutely fantastic experience walking the Coast to Coast, and we’re so grateful to Coast to Coast Packhorse for the excellent planning and support throughout.Walking across three stunning national parks on foot was a unique and unforgettable experience. Every day offered something new — beautiful landscapes, varied walking terrain, and welcoming places to stay. The accommodation was especially well chosen: a lovely mix of pubs, inns, lodges, and the occasional B&B — all either directly on the route or very close by. Arriving at a pub in the afternoon, settling in, and becoming part of village life, even just for a short while, was one of the highlights. We were constantly met with kindness, helpfulness, and genuine interest from hosts and locals — both where we stayed and on the trail itself. It’s also clear that the route is well maintained and appreciated. We walked 320 km and climbed around 9,000 metres, so a decent level of fitness is definitely helpful — but we enjoyed every step.Huge thanks to the team at Packhorse for organising such a smooth and memorable journey. Highly recommended

Third Time with Packhorse and Highly Recommend! This is the third time I have walked the Wainwright Coast to Coast and have used Packhorse every time. The entire staff have always done so well for us both in communication and execution. On my most recent trip this month I had left a t-shirt behind at our hotel in Reeth that had some sentimental value. A quick message to Hayley in the Packhorse office and it was found and delivered to my next day's stay. Brilliant! All of the accommodation Packhorse booked for use were excellent and made for a wonderful end to a long day's hike. Oh and my son LOVED the C2C bandana! Highly recommend!!!!!

Packhorse is on top of everything Five stars all the way for Packhorse and the support they gave my group of five on the Coast to Coast in May/June. Hayley somehow managed to keep track of our custom itinerary, 19 days, 15 different b&bs, one of us only walking half the route, some of us sharing rooms and some not, etc etc. Lots of detail to track and I fully expected some minor bumps along the way, but she was 100% and so upbeat and positive. We even had to be booked into a couple different b&bs last minute and that was no problem. The luggage gentleman (Ian) was on top of it. Because my husband was driving the route, I occasionally didn't leave my bag with the others to be picked up in the a.m. - my bad on that, because it throws off the count, of course. But Ian would always follow up with the inn owner to figure it out and make sure he wasn't leaving something behind. The price was incredibly reasonable, given all the service they provide. They did a nice job of mixing in some very nice places along with the more moderate. I believe all provided bag lunches for a small fee, which made it very easy, as there weren't many places to stop on the routes we took. Hayley even visited the B&B in Kirkby Stephen to say hello, and brought her son along, as they were planning to hike a part of the route that day. Lovely surprise. We didn't use the map book or online maps they provided, as we had worked out our routes well before we went (as everyone should - there are many options). We loved the Packhorse buffs they gifted us, though. Would absolutely use them again. As for the Coast to Coast itself, it's a forever memory now. Among the most meaningful adventures of my life. The Lake District is certainly one of the most beautiful places on earth, although my favorite for pure serenity would be the windswept North York Moors. Here were my faves among the B&Bs, in case that's helpful.Glaramara Hotel, SeatollerOld Water View, PenrithKeld Lodge, KeldWillance Guest House, RichmondAshfield House, Danby WiskeLion Inn, Blakey RidgeLee-Side, Robin Hoods Bay
